What a great day! I kept the video streaming of the inauguration on the
computer the whole day once we got home from school. It's no secret
that Obama wasn't my first choice for president, but once he became the
overall choice for the nation, he also became MY president and I'm very
much ok with that. It was amazing to see the multitudes of people that
had gathered there. I heard a news report that there was over 1.7
million people there and even greater was that there was not ONE single
incident that caused anyone to be arrested. I think that is a huge
accomplishment on the part of the security and that also says so much
about the people of this country. That we are able to gather in such
numbers in such a peaceful way is amazing. How could you not be proud
of this country and its citizens when you witness such a gathering of
peace and hope?
I want to make sure that Max and Aspen know what
yesterday meant for us as a country. I want them to know that its ok to
dream and to hope for something that others say is impossible. I want
them to respect their president no matter who he/she is. One thing I
will not do is disgrace the position of that office in front of my
children. There is a huge amount of respect that should be given to any
person who represents our country. That was one thing I vowed never to
do once I saw some people teaching their children that Bush was a bad
man. That is one message I don't want my children to see. Last night we
were watching the coverage of the inauguration and I took Max beside me
and said, "Do you see that man there?" as I pointed to the tv where
they were showing a recap of Obama taking the oath (which made me smile
Anyone else?).
He said, "Yeah, that nice guy."
"Yes, his name is Barack Obama."
"Barack Obama!"
"Yep and he is a good man. He is the president!"
"I can do that job too!"
"Yes you can! Anyone can! Isn't that great!?"
"Barack Obama!!"
Yesterday was a good day for this country. There wasn't a sense of this party or that party or red or blue states. It was a real feel of togetherness and of coming together as one. We don't always have to agree with each other, we don't always have to hold things against the other for saying something that doesn't jive with us. We don't have to stand down when we want to fight for what we believe in, because our voices can and will be heard. I heard a newsclip yesterday where they were interviewing a lady from Europe and she was commenting on how cool it was that Bush and Obama were able to ride together peacefully and how calm the exchange of office was. She said she was actually jealous of America yesterday. Where else in the world can the outgoing and incoming leader come together so peacefully?
Her words rang so true. There is no where else in the world like America and yesterday I was so proud to call myself an American.
Well said.

Max Stuckey- President 2035! I'd vote for him!
I went around Tuesday holding Tatum up and singing the presidental song. I'm hoping that will be subliminal messaging that she should be president!
